About us
Six electricians, one van each, and a lot of local jobs
Blue Canon Electrical has been looking after Colchester homes and businesses since 2009. We are small enough that you know who is turning up, and established enough to handle the big stuff.
Our story
It started with one van and a borrowed ladder
Dan Whitmore qualified in 2004 and spent five years on commercial sites around Essex before deciding that most people just wanted an electrician who answered the phone and cleaned up afterwards. Blue Canon Electrical started in 2009 out of a garage off the Ipswich Road, with a second-hand van and a lot of word of mouth.
The name came from the old blue cannon on the seafront at Mersea, a family joke about turning up loud and getting things done. Fifteen years on there are six of us, all time-served, all working within about half an hour of Colchester town centre.
We have never advertised on a billboard. Almost every job we do comes from someone who used us before, or a builder, agent or architect who knows the work will pass inspection first time.

Four things we will not budge on
Safety over speed
If a job needs an extra hour to be done to standard, it gets the extra hour. We would rather explain a delay than sign off something we are not happy with.
Honest pricing
Itemised quotes, day rates published on request, and a phone call before anything is added. No mysterious sundries at the bottom of the invoice.
The same faces
We do not subcontract. The person who quotes your job is on site while it is done, and you will recognise them when they come back next time.
Leave it better
Dust sheets down, cable runs planned to avoid unnecessary damage, holes made good and everything hoovered before we pack up.
Qualifications
Registered, assessed and insured
Being NICEIC approved means an independent assessor inspects our work and our paperwork every year. It is also what lets us self-certify notifiable work under Part P, so you are not waiting on Building Control.

- CSCS carded and DBS checked engineers

Between us we have more than sixty years on the tools, most of it within ten miles of Colchester town centre.

Senior Electrician, Testing Lead
Runs our EICR and landlord testing work and writes the reports people can actually understand. Also our resident expert on anything smart-home shaped.

Tom Beale
Electrician and EV Specialist
Handles most of our EV charge point installs and outdoor lighting. If your driveway needs power, Tom has probably already worked out where the cable goes.
